The dedication of Broken Hill Basketball Association President Grahame Semmens extends well beyond the local competition, and that fact was recognised at the 2012 Australian Country Basketball Championships in Albury.

During the closing ceremony of the Championships, Mr Semmens was presented with an Award of Merit for his work with the SA Country team.

Mr Semmens has attended the Country Championships for the past 12 years and served as SA Country’s coach for the past decade.

The presentation was made on behalf of the Australian Country Basketball directors by SA Country Basketball President, Bert Bargeus.

Mr Semmens was one of only four people in the country to receive the award in 2012, and he said he was elated with the recognition both for himself and BH basketball.

“Bert made a wonderful speech regarding my family and myself and our involvement in both local and State basketball over many years,” he said.

“I would just like to say a big thank you to all my family for the continued love and support, and also to everyone who sent messages of congratulations.

“I have to admit that I felt very humbled about the whole thing, but at the same extremely proud for the recognition.”

Mr Semmens also took the time congratulate the young Broncos players who competed in the Championships, and also the Pacific Coast Slam in Port Macquarie.

“Overall Broken Hill can be extremely proud of their young representatives,” he said.

“They all not only did themselves proud, but also their families and their state. Well done to everyone.

“Local referee Mark Harris also attended the Championships as a mentor for junior referees and did a great job. Well done, Mark.”
