The Broken Hill Netball Association (BHNA) is looking to kickstart 2012 with a huge gala weekend of netball next week.

Activities will begin on February 11 with a coaching information night to be held at the netball clubrooms in the O’Neill sporting complex.

The session will start at 6.30pm and will be hosted by Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS) netball representatives.

BHNA Vice President Kylie Kappe said the night is open to anyone who wants to further their knowledge of netball.

“It’s not just for current coaches, it’s for people who might want to coach or are just interested in learning all about netball,” said Ms Kappe.

“It will be a good introduction night for coaching and give people the chance to learn the basics, and also ask any questions they may have had.

“A lot of our coaches are Mums who have come on board, and a lot of the time they’re just thrown into it.

“It’s also a good pathway for those looking for a future in netball, if people are looking to further develop their netball and coaching skills.”

The program of events continues on Sunday with a free development clinic hosted by Netball NSW and FWAS and a registration day.

The clinic will be headed by Netball NSW Development Officer Ashley Bayliss, FWAS Assistant Coach Paula Hasia, FWAS Intermediate Coach Katrina Hausia, and biomechanics specialist Michelle benton.

The “Netty For Fun” program will be incorporated into the clinic, offering kids up to five years old and their parents an opportunity to participate in the day.

“The program is basically for parents to get their kids involved and introduce them to very basic development and ball skills,” said Ms Kappe.

“It will also teach parents the things they can do with their kids - really base skills and coordination activities.”

Netty For Fun will begin at 9am, and will be followed by sessions for kids 6-10 years (9.50am), 11-14 years (5pm) and 15-plus years (6.30pm).

The BHNA will also be accepting registrations for the 2012 season, which is set to commence on Tuesday, March 6.

Games will be held on Tuesdays this season to avoid clashes with the Under 18 football competition, and the Association’s mixed netball competition will be put on hold during the football season.

Ms Kappe said the popularity of mixed netball was one of the many highlights of a successful 2011 season.

“We had a huge season last season and introduced the mixed competition which was great,” she said.

“We had over 500 members without even including the mixed competition at the start of 2011, so we’re hoping to get around that mark again this year.”

Anyone seeking more information on the events or upcoming season can contact Ms Kappe on 0417 824 491 or BHNA President Cathryn Jelbert on 0409 838 922.

Team nomination forms for the season are available from Jetset travel. Nomination forms lodged between 11am and 12.30pm on the registration day will receive a five per cent discount.
