IMPROVEMENTS: Mountain Bike club members such as Corey Sammut will benefit from funding to improve bike trails around the city.
Several sport and recreation bodies are set to receive a boost after City Council announced the first round of its 2011/2012 Community Development Grants.
The Outback Rugby League Juniors, BH Mountain Bike Club and BH Model Flying Club will share in $7300 worth of funding.
Rugby will receive $3000 to support the establishment of a junior program and to assist with uniforms and equipment, while $1,300 will be provided to the Model Flying Club to build a shelter on Willyama Common for spectators and competitors.
Mountain bikers will benefit from the funding program via new permanent sign posting and the upgrading of bike trails around the city.
BH Mountain Bike Club treasurer, Nick Algate, said the grant would have a big impact on their trail behind the Broken Hill Golf Club.
“We have very little signage, actually. We’ve been putting GPS files and google maps on our website (bhmtb.asn.au) to try and improve information about the track.
“When you get out there you actually rely on painted rocks which we mark the course with, but it’s environmentally friendly paint and once you have a shower of rain it washes it all away.
“It will be great to establish some permanent signs and maybe put up a billboard sign at the start that explains the track and its hazards and gives an overview.
Mr Algate said the money would also be used to reduce water damage on the track.
“It will allow us to create natural run-off without impacting on the landscape.” City Council’s General Manager Frank Zaknich said he hoped the grants would provide a range of benefits.
“The Community Development Grants program provides support to initiate new and innovative community development projects,” Mr Zaknich said.
“They are designed for non-profit community groups based in the city to apply for establishment grants where no alternative sources of funding exist.
“The successful organisations have demonstrated that their programs will encourage participation and promote their sport and hobby to a wider audience.”
Community Development Grants are allocated twice yearly and application details are available at www.brokenhill.nsw.gov.au under the grants heading.
