Saturday, 18th February, 2012
READY TO RIDE: Broken Hill Mountain Bike Club members Brian Devlin, Tony Hepburn, Les Borchard and Steve Chinner will be joined by Barney Stevens and Corey Sammut as they tackle the Kona Odyssey mountain bike marathon today/tomorrow.
Members of the Broken Hill Mountain Bike Club will push themselves to the limit tomorrow/today/(Saturday) when they take on the Kona Odyssey mountain bike marathon.
Six riders from the local club will make the journey for the Victorian marathon, which begins in Apollo Bay and winds through the Otway Ranges.
The Kona Odyssey began in 2006 and is one of the premier Mountain Bike marathons in Australia. It is renowned for being one of the toughest mountain bike events as it includes a number of lung-busting hills across the ranges.
Les Borchard, Tony Hepburn, Barney Stevens, Brian Devlin and Steve Chinner will be competing in the 100km Kona Odyssey, while 16-year-old Corey Sammut will be competing in the modified 50km “Kona Shorty”.
They will compete against 2050 riders from all across Australia, battling the elements and each other over difficult terrain.
Anyone wishing to get involved in competitive mountain bike riding can contact club secretary Brodee Borchard on 0487 298 554, or treasurer Nick Algate on 0428 832 474.
There will also be a mountain bike “come and try day” from 5pm on February 25 at the Broken Hill Golf Club.
