This week AFL Broken Hill (AFLBH) will take part in Umpiring Round in honour of the officials who support our local competition. 

Umpiring Round encourages everyone involved in Australian Rules football - coaches, players, administrators, parents and supporters - to play a role in creating a positive match day environment.

At the community level, a welcoming environment ensures umpires feel supported to officiate to the best of their ability.

Under 18 football fires up again tonight with the Magpies looking to build with a win over North, and South and West both searching for their first victory.

In the first game the young Magpies will start favourites against North based on their convincing win over West in the opening round.

For the Magpies, Ethan Williams provides first hands on the footy whilst midfielders Jack Roberts and Sean Power are great distributors of the ball.

The new footy season is about to begin with the Lightning Cup this weekend heralding the start of the season proper. Before what is shaping up as an exciting year of footy, the BDT spoke to each of the four clubs about the season ahead. Today sports writer Graham Ball looks at North.

The Bulldogs will head into the 2012 season not only as the reigning premiers, but with the expectations of its supporters to claim its 36th premiership and go back to back, a task that is difficult at the best of times. 

The off season has been a little rocky for the Bulldogs. After claiming the 2011 premiership coach David Ruddock tended his resignation due to work commitments and the search was on for a new coach.
