Folou Komolafe is the latest in a raft of talented local junior soccer players to be making waves in Adelaide, after the twelve year old was selected in the Football Federation South Australia’s (FFSA) talent identification program.

The program functions as the try outs for FFSA’s under 13s “Skillaroos” team, who will play in the under 13 National Championships in October.

Selection in the squad also leads on to the possibility of being selected for future underage development sides.

Several months of uncertainty over hockey’s future in Broken Hill will be put to bed when the opening round of the 2012 hockey season hits off at Norm Fox Oval tomorrow.

Because of the protracted negotiations to get the season underway, the fixture has taken on an abbreviated, round robin format.

Organiser, Kate Hogg, said that she hoped the shortened season would lead to a fun and relaxed atmosphere which would allow as many people as possible to take to the field.

When Margaret Paul decided to give football umpiring a go she never imagined it would take her to Adelaide’s AAMI Stadium.

The ABC journalist is one of two local women chosen to boundary umpire the women’s game between Broken Hill and Port Lincoln in Adelaide on August 5.

Margaret (28), who moved to Broken Hill earlier this year, is a fan of Australian Rules but previous injuries ruled her out of playing in the women’s competition.

Record prizemoney for SC Races

A massive 40 per cent increase in prizemoney has been announced for the 2012 Silver City Cup race meeting which is now just 100 days away.

Broken Hill’s oldest horse racing event - which will be held this year on October 27 - will be highlighted by the running of the Silver City Cup, which will carry record prizemoney of $15,000.

“This is a massive boost for the horse racing fraternity in Broken Hill and would not have been possible without the generous support of our major sponsors,” President Dave Gallagher said as he kicked off the 100-day countdown to race day.

After a two week break, the Under 18s are back under lights at the Jube tonight.

With five rounds to go before the finals, Central with 10 wins are assured of the minor premiership, whilst West are sitting pretty in second place with six wins.

South have 12 points from their three wins, while the luckless North have only sung the song once in 2012.
