Local State MP John Williams has defended the State Government's plan to slash $1.7 billion out of the education system.

The Member for Murray-Darling yesterday responded to recent outrage from teachers over the cuts and plans for up to 2000 job losses, which were announced earlier this week.

Local MP John Williams has criticised recent negativity surrounding the Broken Hill Film Studio's $100,000 prospectus.

The Member for Murray-Darling said that it must be taken into account that the State Government contributed a total of $35,000
towards the funding of the prospectus.

Mr Williams also said that councillors who had criticised the sum should have raised their voice when it was voted on early this year.

The NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) has condemned comments by local MP John Williams that gay marriage was "unnecessary".

Mr Williams voted against a conscience vote on the issue at a Nationals' conference at the weekend.

He later told the BDT that he didn't understand why gay people would want to be married and that none he had spoken to had "cared" about it.

Local MP John Williams said that he had voted against gay marriage during a conference at the weekend because no one had lobbied him to vote for it.

Mr Williams said that everyone who had spoken to him on the matter had urged him to vote against it.

The topic has been prominent in Federal Parliament of late, with both the Government and the Opposition declaring that marriage "is between a man and a woman".
