The St Vincent De Paul shop in Argent Street will today celebrate its 50th anniversary.

To celebrate, the volunteers will be holding a dinner next weekend and Phil Sky, from the St Vincent de Paul Society, said that today the shop will be putting balloons around and brightening up the store.

The Lions Club is making winter a little more bearable for those doing it tough.

The service club has used proceeds from their Christmas car raffle to buy $1000 worth of blankets and pillows for St Vincent de Paul to hand out to their clients as part of its Winter Appeal.

Low income earners, pensioners and City Council are expected to be among the hardest hit by a 19.7 per cent electricity price hike - the third double digit increase in as many years.

The rise, which will come into effect on July 1, was announced yesterday by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).
