‘Hypocrisy’ charge over job losses

Local MP John Williams has been accused of failing Broken Hill after it was revealed that the local office of small business is to close.

But Mr Williams said a $5million Small Biz Direct Program will be more effective than the current model for small businesses.

It is understood two people are employed at the office in the State Office Block. It is one of four NSW Department of Trade and Investment Small Business and Regional Development Offices facing closure.

The Barrier Highway was reopened yesterday after a detour road around the collapsed bridge at Pine Creek was completed in just two days.

The bridge, just past Cockburn, collapsed last week in heavy rain and was not due to reopen until the end of next week, according to the South Australian Government.

The Barrier District Cricket League draws the curtain on its 2011/12 cricket season with the start of its Grand Final series of games today after a lost weekend to rain last weekend.

The A Grade Final at the Alma Oval will be a replay of the 2010/11 Grand Final between West and Central. 

Once again the weather has played a part in the Finals series but the League has seen fit to extend the Finals to six available days this season in which to complete the best of three 50 over contests.

The newly-elected president of the Silver City Racing Club says he is hoping to restore amenities to the club’s members at this year’s cup meeting.

Dave Gallagher was sworn in recently at the committee’s AGM.

Mr Gallagher said that the general feedback from last year’s meeting was “very good” but that the members could have been better looked after.

Highway fix imminent

The Barrier Highway will be reopened much sooner than expected with the construction on a detour road starting today.

The closure occurred after a bridge at Pine Creek just past Cockburn, collapsed in torrential rain last week.

A temporary bridge is on its way from Queensland but it could take up to a fortnight for it to arrive.
