A fire at the Southern Cross Hotel yesterday could have caused serious damage if it was not for the quick actions of the fire brigade.

The rubbish storage area at the hotel caught alight, right next to gas bottles.

A scrub fire that broke out on Perilya's North Mine lease yesterday didn't appear to have been deliberately lit, fire crews said.

Ten firef ighters worked to contain the grass fire which was billowing smoke and catching the attention of passing motorists along Argent Street.

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in relation to a blaze that destroyed a Creedon Street house on Monday night.

The man, who is the de facto partner of the owner of the house, was arrested by officers at a Thomas Street home yesterday.

Firefighters and police arrived at the scene just before 9pm to find the entire house engulfed by flames. It took crews two hours to put out the fire and check for hot spots.
