A lot has happened since the first NSW police officers donned their uniforms in 1862.

To celebrate 150 years of the NSW Police Force, local officers have burned the midnight oil in researching their rich story to create 10 banners displaying its key moments.

Crime spree worries cops

 Extra police are being deployed to patrol the streets at night after a spate of burglaries at the weekend.

In Blende Street thieves broke into a house and stole $10,000 worth of items including two large televisions. The house was also vandalised by the thieves, police said.

Houses in Galena, Cobalt and Cornish streets were also robbed as well as a home in Oxide Street where the offenders caused $4000 damage, the police said.

An elderly couple at a home in Hebbard Street had their ute stolen along with $200 in cash while they slept in the early hours of Saturday morning. The ute was later found abandoned.

Shopkeeper beaten by armed robbers

Police are hunting for two men who robbed a shop owner at gun-point late on Thursday night.

The 61-year-old owner of the Brookfield Avenue mixed business was seriously assaulted and suffered cuts and bruises to his head, police said yesterday.

The thieves escaped with a “quantity of cash” in the robbery which was committed about 10.30pm, the police said.

Standoff escalates

NSW Police officers have to wait to take their industrial action to the next level which could have them refusing to respond to any but the most serious emergencies.

The police aren’t happy with the State Government’s proposed changes to their Death and Disability Scheme and have voted to up the ante.

Matt Thomson from the NSW Police Association (Western Region) said the members at Tuesday’s rally in Sydney decided to go to an electronic vote.

Cops hit Canberra

Police officers across the State will protest outside of Parliament House today over the proposed changes to the police death and disability scheme.

Local officers have decided to take their message straight to the politicians, according to Police Association (Western Region) Executive Member Robert Dunn.

“It’s a shame it’s come to this, but what other option do we have? Our local Government MPs aren’t sticking up for police officers, particularly those who have put their life on the line to keep our community safe,” Mr Dunn said.
