They might be another year older but that won’t stop former Magpies Brett Morris and Jimmy Hinton having a run in the AFL Masters carnival later this month for South Australia.
Morris, 56, will be taking part in the national carnival for the seventh time and has been selected as an All Australian on five occasions while Hinton, 65, is a veteran at this level having taken part in close to 20 carnivals.
Both Morris and Hinton will play for SA this year - Morris in the over 55s and Hinton in the over 60s - with Hinton returning to the tri-colours after a couple of years playing for NSW.
The pair, both of whom are members of the Broken Hill Shinglebacks, have put in a great deal of preparation for the carnival.
Morris and Hinton have both played a game of master’s football in Adelaide earlier this season, putting them miles ahead of most of their teammates and opponents in the upcoming competition.
While the manic fitness habits of Morris are well documented, Hinton has also kept himself in great shape by becoming one of Broken Hill’s premier goal umpires.
It’s believed that Hinton will line up on the half-back flank, playing more of a rebound role ala Jason Johannisen in the 2016 grand final while Morris, a junior in the over 55s team, will likely only see his midfield opponent when they shake hands at the start and end of the game.
The 2018 AFL Masters carnival will take place in Coffs Harbour with 45 teams in attendance. Hinton’s son Jamie will also be playing in the carnival for NSW.
