There’s lot of things you can do to help raise money to support cancer patients - trivia nights, meat draws, bake cakes, or simply put your hand in your pocket and part with a few shekels.

Lismore Hospital domestic worker Dean Golding decided to drop a Holden V8 engine into a Toyota Crown.

“It drinks likes a fish,” said Dean, after stopping in Argent Street on Saturday as part of the Mystery Box Rally.

“That’s why we called it Half Ass’d ... it was a half-arsed idea.

“We should have thought about it.”

Dean had to stop about 40km from Broken Hill and fill up his thirsty Aussie-powered Crown from a jerry can.

He decided to join the five-day rally and support the cause after battling a bout of bowel cancer.

The Mystery Box Tour kicked off in Mildura on Saturday and brought 150 rally-lovers to Broken Hill by lunch time.

The crew - from all over Australia and New Zealand - has so far raised $750,000.

Each day of the rally, they get a sheet with their next destination.

Next stop was Milparinka and beyond, before returning to Mildura on Wednesday.
