The Demo Club A Grade competition returns to the shortest format of T20 this weekend with South and West in an important clash at the Jubilee Oval.

Last time they met:

South 2 for 181 (S. Hall 104*, M. Reavill 46*) def West 179 (N. Schofield 41, L. King 44; B. Franklyn 4-47, N. Waterhouse 3-33) by eight wickets with 120 balls remaining

A lot of runs were scored in the round four clash between these sides headlined by a brutal hundred from South’s Sheldon Hall. West made a competitive 179 built around Nick Schofield (41) and Liam King (44) but South made light work of the chase, winning in the 20th over thanks to Hall’s 104 and Matt Reavill’s unbeaten 46.

Recent form:

South - WLWWL

The Roos sit second with four wins from six games but their only losses have come against reining premiers and ladder leaders North including last weekend by 127 runs at the Jube.

Their batting failed last week but overall there has been a huge improvement from South in that area. Hall and Reavill both have over 100 runs for the season while Ryan Gillespie isn’t far behind with 93.

West - LWLLL

It has been a tough start for West who sit at 1-5 after six games including a 42-run loss last weekend to give Central their first win of the season. Mackenzie Attard played a lone hand last week, making 83 out of West’s 163-run total.

Schofield has been a shining light for the Robins with the junior taking eight wickets at an average of 16 from four games.

South - B. Franklyn (c), A. Page (vc), S. Hall, P. Nicholas, M. Reavill, J. Simpson, M. Singh, N. Waterhouse, A. Bird, R. Gillespie, L. Hebbard, N. Soomro (12th)

South have a packed side for today’s clash as they regain the likes of Reavill and Mani Singh while former skipper Arlen Bird has been named to play his first A Grade game in a number of seasons. RV Kumar, Matt Lihou and Jason Harvey are out from last round.

West - M. Attard (c), Paul Attard, Paddric Attard, J. Meehan, C. Pearce, A. Ferguson, C. Ferguson, L. Kaye, C. Stenhouse, B. Harvey, N. Schofield, J. Campbell

Veteran Paul Attard returns to the side for today’s clash as does batsman Jordan Meehan who scored 57 last weekend in B Grade. Austin Ferguson, Casey Ferguson, Lachlan Kaye and Bobby Harvey also come in with Max Everuss, Tom Burke, Daniel Milne, Liam King and Matt Adams missing out.

Player spotlight:

Jack Simpson - South

One of the more recent additions to South’s squad, Simpson has taken some time to find his feet but might have found his role in the batting lineup as an opener with a couple of starts in the last two games.

On top of his batting, his left-arm orthodox spin impressed last weekend and is sure to get him more overs going forward.

Colby Stenhouse - West

Stenhouse has an ungainly but effective bowling action and has eight wickets so far in 2018/19. He makes up a young West bowling attack that includes Austin Ferguson and Schofield.

Stenhouse’s best performance came in round three against Central with 4-28 from eight overs, including two maidens.

Tyler’s say:

While there is still plenty of cricket left in the 2018/19 season, slipping to 1-6 would make things very tough for West especially after the club lost competition points prior to the season for failure to attend a league meeting.

Much rests on new captain Mackenzie Attard with the bat especially without Everuss in the lineup. Paul Attard’s inclusion adds experience and leadership and he’ll be able to help out son Mackenzie in the field.

South are favourites in this one but will be keen for a swift response to last weekend’s heavy loss to North. The return of Reavill, who missed the North clash due to work but made 63 in B Grade on Sunday, bolsters their batting while they’ll be backing Hall, Gillespie and Paul Nicholas not to miss out again.
