Special day for Aileen
Wednesday, 12th December, 2018
Aileen Tyler celebrated her 90th birthday yesterday with family and friends from near and far at St Anne’s Nursing Home.
An avid reader, Aileen said she used to often go to the library and read book after book and one year she was recognised as the library’s top reader.
She also remembered how she used to go to the famous Palais de Danse with husband, John, and how she would look after the young Taylor Walker on occasions for her friend and local hairdresser, Margaret Walker.
Aileen also recalled how she’d wait in line for hours to get a block of ice from the ice works in Wills and Blende streets with the family.
Trips to Silverton with the family were fond memories as well.
“We used to go out to Silverton on cattle trucks,” she said. “Mum and Dad would go in two carriages that were attached to the engine and the kids went in the cattle trucks after all the holes in the trucks had been plugged up.
“We’d go out there and run races with prizes for whoever won. A picnic day was something we really looked forward to.”
