With Christmas almost here the local police are reminding residents to be wary of thieves when organising drop-off points for Christmas packages and letters.
While there’s been no reported cases of Christmas package theft so far, Inspector Ben Clavel said the public should remain ‘vigilant’ and plan alternative arrangements when collecting packages and letters over the festive period.
“The Christmas period is a time of year when households receive more mail than they usually do,” said Insp. Clavel.
“Unfortunately this can attract would be thieves who target and steal valuable items from homes and/or letter boxes.
“Police would ask the public to remain vigilant and make alternative arrangements with the post office or courier companies when deciding where and when to collect the items that they are expecting to receive.
“Other arrangements can include picking up the mail from the post office or organising another person to do the pick up on your behalf.”
A spokesperson for Australia Post said that if customers wanted greater flexibility and protection over their parcels they could utilise the MyPost Deliveries service.
“This gives receivers the flexibility to elect to have their parcels redirected in-transit to a more convenient address, text their delivery preference, and even have their items sent to their local Post Office or 24/7 Parcel Locker,” he said.
