North with mental edge

Ladder leaders North will take on Central at the Jubilee Oval in the final round before the Christmas Holiday break.
Last time they met:
North 9 for 121 (C. Howard 46, B. Bergman 23; J. Paull 3-10, D. O’Mally 2-11) def Central 9 for 78 (D. Pettitt 23; C. Howard 3-12, J. Vella 3-12) by 43 runs after posting a competitive 121 on a tough Jubilee Oval wicket in round seven’s T20 match, North’s bowlers strangled Central with tight lines and regular wickets to easily win by 43 runs. Codie Howard looked a class above with the bat to score 46 before taking three wickets.
Central - LLWLD
Central picked up their first win of the season in round six before going down to North the following week. Last weekend’s scheduled game against West was called off after the heavy rain on Friday.
Tristen Smith heads the wickets tally for Central with 12 but skipper David O’Mally and seam bowler Ross Casey aren’t far behind with 10 apiece.
North - WWWWD
It looks like the only thing that can halt this North side is rain which caused last weekend’s match with South to be abandoned.
They currently have three of the top four run scorers in A Grade with Howard (208 runs) leading the way, Bill Bergman (180) in second and captain Tobias Hack (150) in fourth spot.
Central - D. O’Mally (c), J. Paull, T. Smith, L. Neal, R. Casey, S. Mateer, M. Maalste, D. Pettitt, J. Bressanelli, A. Williams, J. Maalste
Scott Mateer and Jason Maalste are set to make their first appearance in A Grade this season while James Bressanelli and Luke Neal also return to the side. Jon Carrett, Adam Rhodes, Riley Elvery and Jay Carapellotti are out.
North - T. Hack (c), J. Vella, C. Howard, B. Bergman, B. Martin, A. Tidball, B. Victory, J. Schorn, N. Mitchell, T. Davey, K. McEvoy, A. Wilson (12th), E. Thomas (13th)
Dutchman Dan ter Braak, all-rounder Josh Savage and junior spin bowler Luke Hall make way for Anthony Tidball, Jackson Schorn, Nash Mitchell and Ben Victory, who took five wickets last weekend in B Grade. Austin Wilson has been named as 12th man.
Jarred Paull - Central
You will struggle to find a player who has done more for the Central Cricket Club over the last 15 years than Jarred Paull. The powerful all-rounder contributes with bat, ball and remains the best fielder in town.
Paull often makes important runs in the big games, most notably his back-to-back half centuries in the 2016/17 semi and grand finals which saw the Magpies win a record-equaling fifth A Grade premiership in a row.
The former skipper showed his class in round six with a fantastic century, guiding his team to victory over West and also took 3-10 against North most recently.
Tom Davey - North
Davey has continued to improve with each season and now leads North’s bowling attack with pace and bounce. His endeavour can never be questioned and he’ll hit the pitch hard all the way through his spell.
Davey’s last two seasons for the Bulldogs have been very consistent with 13 wickets at 16.85 and 16 wickets at 13.13 respectively. He’s had a solid season so far with eight wickets 12.38 in six games and a best return of 3-22 against South in round three.
It’s tough to see Central getting the win here today especially without the likes of Carrett, Rhodes and Elvery despite their lack of form. So much rests on the shoulders of Jarred Paull and while he is capable of dragging his team to a win like he did in round six, it’ll be much harder against the Dogs.
North too are a little thin batting-wise with ter Braak, Matt Letcher and Eddie Morgan among those not in the side but with Howard, Bergman and Hack still there they should be able to post a competitive score.
For Central to win today it’ll take someone like Smith to really get going with the bat. He’s threatened to at times so far this season without making a substantial score.
