A ferocious car fire in South Broken Hill on Sunday night may have been deliberately lit.

Emergency services rushed to a lot on the corner of Boughtman and Bonanza streets about 11.15pm.

Firefighters found two cars ablaze in a car yard, and extinguished the fires within ten minutes.

Police have been investigating the cause of the fire and are currently going down a number of lines of enquiry.

Neighbour Angus Gardner said he and his girlfriend saw the large fire about 11pm.

“My girlfriend was out the front and she heard most of it,” Mr Gardner said.

“She said she heard noises in there before she saw a fire.

“I was woken up by her telling me that she’d called the police.

“For the vast majority there was a lot of loud noises, a lot of banging, loud explosion-sounding noises, and a lot of yelling from passers-by.

“There were fire engines and stuff everywhere.”

Anyone with information about the fire can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
