A young local couple expecting their first child have found out he has a rare congenital heart defect that will require emergency surgery.
Isabelle Wellings and Josh Hands are expecting their first baby in July, but they have to travel more than 800km to Melbourne for pre-birth care, delivery and heart surgery.
This means Isabelle will be away from home from mid-June onwards with the possibility of having to stay in Melbourne for up to 12 weeks or longer.
This had prompted Isabelle’s mother, Priscilla, to create a GoFundMe page to support the young couple.
“We are seeking funds to help assist them and take a little of the pressure and stress away,” Priscilla said.
“Isabelle will be in Melbourne three weeks before Josh will join her to welcome their bundle of joy then they have the long road ahead of them with their baby having major heart surgery.”
Isabelle’s grandmother, Jackie Jackson, said it was heartbreaking for the family.
“They’ve been really humble but they are battling,” she said. “Isabelle will have to go to Adelaide soon and stay there, then they will go to Melbourne.
“They’ve had a really rough time.
“They’re paying for their house, cars and Isabelle has worked right up until last week.
“Thankfully the baby is doing fine. He is a week ahead size-wise.”
Jackie said they really needed a helping hand.
“They are trying to do it on their own, but we can see they need a bit of help.
“It would take the pressure off of them.”
