Gym-goers had their workout disrupted yesterday due to a refrigerant fitting failure at the YMCA Integrated Wellness Centre.

Just before midday, the YMCA posted on Facebook that they were closed due to an evacuation.

“Please be advised that the wellness centre has been closed due to an evacuation,” the post said.

“To ensure the safety of our members and staff we are currently investigating the cause of the evacuation. We will advise when the centre is ready to reopen and apologise for any inconvenience.”

The fire brigade and ambulance service were called to the evacuation with the company who handled the revamp, Hutchinson Builders, also arriving.

The YMCA reopened an hour later with Acting Assistant Manager Jacinta Simmons saying repairs were underway.

“I can confirm the evacuation was due to a crimped refrigerant fitting failure,” she said.

“Repairs for the works are currently being undertaken and we apologise for any disruption that this may have caused to YMCA members and the general public.”
