Off the back of a thrilling win over West last weekend, North take on a Central team desperate for a win today at the Jubilee Oval.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

North: 21.8 (134) def Central: 5.7 (37)

An 11-goal to two first half set up North’s 97-point win over the Magpies in round six at the Memorial Oval. The star of the day was undoubtedly Jayden Kelly who booted 11 goals while playing as a permanent forward.

North veterans Quinton Beavan and Eddie Morgan returned to their best form while Jason Masclet and Matt Sullivan battled hard for Central.

RECENT FORM:

North - WLWLW

The Bulldogs scored an important win over West last weekend by the barest of margins to put themselves right back in the premiership hunt.

They led all day until West stormed home in the final term, taking the lead late, but North had one final push with Shane Dalby marking the ball deep in the Bulldogs’ forward line and slotting the winning goal.

Central - LLLLL

It was another tough day at the office for Central last Saturday as they fell to South by 142 points at the Alma Oval. The Pies managed just one goal and that came late in the final term.

Scoring has been a major issue for Central across the first eight rounds. They’re best return is five goals in rounds two, four and six but they’ve been held to one goal on four separate occasions.

INS AND OUTS:

North

IN: M. Garrick, B. Johnson, A. Henderson, J. Cini

OUT: M. Reberger, A. Tidball, R. Turner, J. Watson

Senior players Mat Garrick, Brett Johnson and Anthony Henderson all return to the side this week after missing last week’s game, as does junior Jakarda Cini.

Midfielders Mitch Reberger and Anthony Tidball, utility Jedd Watson and junior Rogan Turner are out.

Central

IN: S. Beven, S. Lawrence, E. Ferguson, J. Cox, A. Williams, S. Hall, A. Killeen, G. Mason, S. Woodhall, J. Benton, R. Curtis

OUT: J. Heath, J. Joliffe, J. Paull, W. Campbell, J. Page, L. Barnes, K. Farcich, P. Jenkinson, J. Gilby, L. Neal, Z. White, J. Moran

Central have made a whopping 12 changes to the side that lost to South last week with one spot on the bench still to be confirmed.

Ruckman Sam Beven and speedy forward Jordan Cox headline the inclusions while Evan Ferguson makes his debut for the Magpies and Sheldon Hall comes in for his first game of 2019.

Justin Heath, Kyle Farcich, Luke Neal, Zayden White, Josh Joliffe and James Moran are the big outs for Central today.

TYLER’S SAY:

North will take a huge amount of confidence out of their win last week over West and, if they’re anywhere near their best, they should be far too strong for Central today.

Trent Barraclough was brilliant last weekend as North’s mobile ruckman. Barraclough’s agility and skills were on full display as he racked up countless possessions around the ground as well as competing well in the ruck. He could well be North’s trump card as finals approach.

Curtis Jelbert made his North debut last weekend, kicking two goals, and now comes up against his former side. With Jelbert and Henderson, as well as Dalby and Kelly’s ability to play forward, North’s forward line is starting to shape up nicely.

We’re halfway through the season and Central’s finals chances are all but mathematically done with them eight points behind North but they can still get something out of this rebuilding season.

Players like Bayden Quinn and Lachy Jenkin, as well as juniors such as Cooper Oates, just need to play more football and getting them on the field consistently through the rest of 2019 has to be the aim.

Jason Masclet, Hamish McLean, Matt Sullivan and Josh Hanford are quality players and will always give it their all but they need the same effort from the rest of the side. If they can produce that required effort, then today’s game will be a competitive contest, at least on the field if not on the scoreboard.
