West just edged out Alma while St Joes will go into the break full of confidence following a big win over Celtic in round eight of local soccer on Sunday.

Celtic United took on St Joes in the early game and while he first half was a competitive contest, the Joeys ran away with it after halftime.

Both teams created chances in the first half but St Joes looked the more dangerous when going into attack.

They scored first thanks to captain Rob James and narrowly missed a second when a Pat Nash shot lobbed onto the crossbar.

St Joes had their second goal shortly after the restart with James again finding the back of the net while Nash had more luck in the second half, scoring twice in the 4-1 victory. Jared Stuart scored Celtic’s only goal for the match.

Nash and James were the standouts for St Joes, while Steve Grillet, Shane Kegel and Matt Muscat contributed strongly.

Blake Rogers had another superb game for Celtic but too much was left to too few.

The win gives St Joes some breathing space over Celtic and keeps them in touch with West at the top of the A Grade ladder heading into the two-week break.

Later on Sunday West maintained top spot with a quality win over Alma.

A double from star forward Jordan Cox led the way for the Panthers while Adam Betts also scored in the 3-2 win.

Daniel McInerney and Samuel Harrap each scored for Alma.

Alma’s recent good form has been a big improvement but it’s only led to a draw with St Joes and an honourable loss to West.

The Goats season is quite over yet but it’s a long way back with seven rounds to go.

West can enjoy the two-week break on top of the ladder but will know that they need to be in top form for the second half of the season with St Joes hot on their heels.

Elsewhere on Sunday, West defeated Alma 2-1 in while Lachlan Cattonar scored twice in St Joes’ 3-0 victory against Celtic in B Grade.

Two goals from Stephanie Harman led Alma to a 4-2 win over West. Rebecca Deer scored both of West’s goals.

The Celtic women proved too strong for St Joes, winning 3-2.
