Hard copies scarce
Saturday, 30th May, 2020
With the announcement this week that more than 100 NewsCorp mastheads would become digital-only publications, the Barrier Truth is happy to be able to deliver its weekly hard copy.
NewsCorp said there would “regretfully” be job losses associated with the announcement, but the exact number is not yet known.
Barrier Truth general manager Gavin Schmidt said it was sad to see the loss of so many mastheads, especially after the Truth came close to closing its doors last month.
“The current climate is making it harder for print editions to remain viable,” Mr Schmidt said.
“Thanks to the support from former local Rob Williamson, local businesses and mining companies as well as City Council, we were able to get our weekly edition up and running.”
Mr Schmidt hopes in the future there would be a chance to run more editions throughout the week.
The Barrier Truth has featured in a ‘Canva’ story about the impacts on media and journalists during COVID-19.
Episode 5 of One for All shines a light on global journalism during the COVID-19 pandemic. For two very different newspapers in two very different cities, journalism has never been more important.
Mark Thompson of The New York Times and Gavin Schmidt of Broken Hill’s Barrier Daily Truth share how both papers are striving to keep the public informed during the biggest story of our lives.
