Ten bicycles will be given away at tomorrow night's harness racing meeting, courtesy of former local Ray Baker.

Mr Baker, who lives in Melbourne and runs equine performance business Carbine Chemicals, is as passionate about Broken Hill as he is about racing.

Despite moving away 30 years ago, Mr Baker always returns for the St Pat's and Silver City Cup race meetings. While he's here, he likes to "give something back to the community that helped put me where I am".

He is also helping out at tonight's greyhound meeting by sponsoring the fifth race, the Carbine Chemicals Sprint. He has donated five boys' and five girls' bicycles to be given away at tomorrow night's harness racing meeting.

One of each will be given away at the end of each race. "When I was a kid here we were lucky because we had old blokes there to nurture us through mosquito squads and things, who passed their skills along," said Mr Baker.

"Hopefully by doing the same thing I can spark an interest in the young ones. And all kids love pushbikes, and they'll get some use."
