For the past three years Raynor Hicks has participated in the Lions Youth of the Year competition and won the Best Public Speaker Award.
This year, however, she has won both the public speaking award and was named the overall winner.
According to Nikki Cocks from the BH Lions Club, it has been many years since one contestant won both awards.
There were three local contestants - Raynor Hicks, from Willyama High School, and Hannah Brimstone and Elliott Mallon, from Broken Hill High School.
The students were interviewed by a panel of three judges and tested on their general knowledge and personality.
Later they had to present a five-minute speech on their own topic and two two-minute impromptu speeches, one which was about the benefits toBroken Hill of the film studio and Fury Road, and the other about the impact of functions such as the Big Day Out on youth.
"Impromptu speeches always make me nervous," said Raynor."They are always nerve-wracking. I was looking forward to my prepared speech."
Raynor will now represent the BH Lions Club at the next level of the competition which will be held in the city early next year.
"I hope to do well at the regional competition and represent Broken Hill and Willyama," she said.
