Police are seeking help from the public to find a man they believe may have broken into Perilya and stolen copper.

A "substantial amount" of the metal was stolen from a disused substation at the mine's Southern Operations some time between November 22 and 29, police said yesterday.

They said the man they were looking for was captured on camera at the mine on Monday, November 29.

He is in his 20s with dark blonde/brown hair, between 180 and 185 centimetres tall. He was wearing black tracksuit pants with white stripes, a black tracksuit top and running shoes.

Police said that at the very least they would be looking at charging the man with trespassing.

Anyone with information should contact Broken Hill detectives on 8087 0299 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
