An inmate of the local jail who allegedly struck a prison officer in the face with a pool ball on Saturday has been transferred out of town.

Police said yesterday that they were still investigating the incident and that they expected to lay charges soon.

The suspect is a 30-year-old man who has now been sent to a higher security jail in Goulburn, they said, correcting yesterday’s police report which stated that he was 20.

Once charges have been laid, he will be brought back to Broken Hill to answer them in the Local Court.

The 42-year-old prison officer remains in the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he is undergoing surgery for serious injuries to his eye and face, the police said.

It is alleged that on Saturday afternoon the prisoner threw an 8-ball which went through the bars of the prison’s recreation room and struck the officer in the left eye, resulting in three fractures to his face.

Yesterday the police Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Mick Stoltenberg, conveyed his sympathy on behalf of the local police force.

“Thoughts and best wishes from all members of the Barrier Local Area Command police go out to the officer, his family and workmates,” said DI Stoltenberg.
