The XXXX Gold Australian solo speedway championship is drawing big crowds as it makes its way to Broken Hill.

The first round was held at Kurri Kurri last night, with British GP champion and dual Australian Champion Chris Holders victorious.

Holder was highly fancied going in but didn't have it all his own way, coming under some serious pressure from Queensland's Davey Watt, Mildura's Cory Gathercole and World Under 21 Champion Darcy Ward.

Mildura's Justin Sedgmen was right on the pace all night, but an unlucky engine failure kept him from the final.

Sedgmen won a heat in his first race and looked like he was ready to do business, finishing the qualifying heat tied on eight points but missing the final on a count back.

The final placing at Kurri Kurri was Holder first, followed by Davey Watt, Jason Doyle, and Cory Gathercole.

Nearly all of the riders competing in the championship have professional careers in Europe.

The scene is now set for a big week with the Championship going to Adelaide this Saturday Night, and to Broken Hill for the Australia Day Clash on Wednesday, January 26. It's then onto Mildura for the final round on Saturday, January 29.
