Wild brawl in Wilcannia
Monday, 31st January, 2011
Police vehicles were pelted with bottles and sticks when they went to quell a huge brawl that broke out in Wilcannia on Friday night.
About 100 people were involved in the brawl which followed a funeral in the town that day, police said yesterday.
The fighting erupted late in the night and when Wilcannia police arrived about 11.30pm at the scene, at the corner of James Street and the Barrier Highway, they were attacked and had to call for back-up, a police spokeswoman said.
Two police vehicles were dispatched from Broken Hill and all off-duty officers in Wilcannia were recalled to work as well, the spokeswoman said.
Men and women were involved in the fighting which consisted of a number of individual skirmishes between drunken groups, she said.
It took about an hour to break up the fights but about 3.30am they started again, although on a smaller scale, the officer said.
Two people were arrested at the scene and more arrests would be made as the investigation continued, she said.
