A machine used to dig trenches and some timber pallets were among items destroyed by fire at Essential Energy's work depot in Wolfram Street last night.
Both the central and south fire stations responded to the blaze which started sometime before 6pm and took 15 firefighters 40 minutes to bring under control.
Station Officer Steve Evans said it was unclear what had started the fire.
"We're still making further investigations," he said.
Firefighters received a triple zero call just after 6pm and raced to the depot to find a number of items, including a trench digger and trailer, well alight.
"They had to use breathing apparatus because of the smoke," So Evans said.
Police and an ambulance crew also attended.
