Luck of the Irish
Thursday, 17th March, 2011
As anticipation builds toward Broken Hill's biggest annual sporting and social occasion this weekend, the St Pat's Race Club hasn't overlooked the fact that today is officially St Patrick's Day.
A religious holiday celebrated internationally on March 17, St Patrick's Day is named after the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland.
The Irish have observed this day for over 1000 years and traditionally families attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.
The local race club has decided to enter into the St Pat's spirit today by offering a prize for anyone who joins the club as a member by 5pm this afternoon.
The competition, which is also open to all those who have previously become members for the 2011 race meeting, carries a prize of a three-person outdoor setting valued at more than $500.
"We have had a strong response to our membership this year," club president Margaret Corradini said.
"I feel adding the sweep ticket into the membership package has made the option of being a member attractive to many people."
As well as memberships, the club is also pre-selling general admission tickets from their office in Crystal Street.
"We have done this for a few years and for those who don't want to become a member they can pre-purchase their general admission which saves them lining up at the gate on Saturday," Mrs Corradini said.
