After holding its most successful race meeting last year since it re-formed, the Silver City Cup race meeting is in jeopardy.

The committee's President Christine Kersten told the BDT that after sending out close to a dozen invitations to possible committee members for a meeting this month, only two people, Heidi and Keith Smith, showed up.

"It was really poor attendance," Mrs Kersten said.

Another blow to the club was the exit of long-standing secretary Marg Andrews, who held the position for more than 11 years.

"I want to get on with my life," Ms Andrews said yesterday. "I just did the best I could."

She said the main problem was not the club itself, but rather the lack of volunteers in the city.

"It's not a great demand of time that you need to devote to the race meeting," said Ms Andrews who added that she would be "extremely disappointed" if the club folded again.

For the meeting to go ahead this year, Ms Kersten said the most important thing was to find a club secretary.

"Marg Andrews will give them her full support," she said.

"She is willing to help them through the first year.

"It's a fair workload, but it's not demanding like St Pat's."

The secretary will also be given an honorarium for their efforts.

"It's not a bad figure," Mrs Kersten said.

The trouble has come despite a very successful race meeting in 2010 which attracted the most people that organisers had seen since the old club re-formed in 1997. In 2006 it went into a partnership with the St Pat's race club.

"We had a really wonderful race last year. It was the best we've taken through the gate," Mrs Kersten said.

President of the St Pat's race club, Marg Corradini, declined to comment on whether the St Pat's committee would step in to fill the void.

However, Mrs Kersten said the Silver City Cup committee had long been independent of the St Pat's racing club, and would make contact with St Pat's race club only if no committee members could be found.

The organisation of the meeting, which is held in October on Cox Plate Day, usually starts around this time of the year, and Mrs Kersten is hoping to call a another meeting soon.
