Shingleback shortage, winning streak in jeopardy

Saturday, 26th March, 2011

By Thin Lizzie
Masters Aussie Rules comes to the Jubilee Oval today at 4pm when the local Shinglebacks tackle the Riverland Superdogs.
Brett Morris will have charge of the magnetic board with Rob Rule and Rod Garner working the rotations from the bench while Horrie struts his stuff.
The Shinglebacks’ depth will be put to the test with several lizards unavailable including Garry Sandy, Jim Hinton and Richard McLean (in Adelaide with Centrals), whilst Jay Robins, Scott Lawrence, Jason Cox and Dave Kuerschner will be partying out bush.
Add work commitments for Jason Ferguson, Todd Stevens, Nick Pascoe and Paul O’Brien, plus maternity department commitments for Trevor Rynne, and you get the feeling the Shinglebacks’ winning streak may be in jeopardy.
Thankfully the “Biggest Losers” over summer, Peter Nash and Frank Napoli, will be on hand to run the Superdogs ragged in their now baggy shorts!
More relevant will be the dash provided by our own greyhound Captain, Craig Thomas, plus our South B grade veterans Hayden Langdon, Justin Roberts, Sammy Hocking, Brad Pressler and new “boy” Anthony Farquhar.
Rumour has it “Colonel Burger” Phil Neal may be unleashed in the back pocket to cover for Sandy. Morris has made the call to his “waxing” mate Josh Savage to line up at half back with the big Fireman Greg Hardy slotted into CBH to cover for Rynne.
Ahead of centre the Shinglebacks have some great goal kickers (and shocking chasers) with Jarrod Burke standing in for the big boys Alby Hoskins and Clayton (TAB) Trengove who have been hiding all summer. Burke has been training the house down and even took the odd screamer at the Night Train last week.
Geoff Lehman will start at half forward and his booming kicks will amaze the casual observer whilst the Reverend, Wayne Lee, will be ensuring everyone remembers the “footy for fun” philosophies of Masters AFL.
The re-elected President, Terry Anderson, has pulled rank and been slotted into the soought-after “canteen” forward pocket spot. Wayne Murray returns at CHF after a solid off season (at the Sturt!), whilst the really “old fox” Maurie Hetherton is saddling up again in preparation for the 2011 National Carnival on the Sunshine Coast.
Big things are required from the new kid on the block, Steven Groves, who will be a handy replacement for the injured Mason Kumm in the ruck. Players available and not listed below should contact Peter Nash (0427 095091) or arrive at the ground at 3pm, as both sides will be looking for more players during the game.
Anyone with first aid/strapping skills is encouraged to come down to the Jube at 3pm and lend a hand.
The after game function will be held at the Sturt Club.
Entry is by gold coin donation (with kids free) and patrons are advised that there will be no canteen or bar open.
