Man in court for 'spitting on police'
Tuesday, 29th March, 2011
A Wilcannia man allegedly abused police and spat on an officer before damaging the police vehicle that was transporting him to Broken Hill.
Police said the man had been aggressive and abusive towards them at two separate Barkindji Drive homes on Saturday night.
Officers did not arrest him at the time because there was a gathering of people in the vicinity but caught up with him at his home on Sunday.
During the arrest it is alleged that the man spat in the face of one of the officers.
He was charged with two counts of intimidating police and assaulting an officer before being transferred to Broken Hill.
On the trip police allege that he "constantly" kicked at the caged area of the vehicle, causing extensive damage.
At the local station, police said he was placed in a cell and was seen to spit a number of times in an attempt to cover the cell's CCTV camera.
The man was then charged with two counts of malicious damage, one relating to the police vehicle and the other for the cell.
Yesterday Brendan Jones appeared in the Local Court where he pleaded guilty to the malicious damage charges.
Jones was not required to enter a plea on the other charges. He was refused bail and the matter was adjourned to April 12.
