Rookie racers to carve it up
Saturday, 16th April, 2011
The wait is almost over for rookies Kasey Staker and Blair Pinal who will take to the track for the very first time tonight at the Broken Hill Speedway.
Eighteen-year-old Staker, who is racing in the street stocks event along with older brother Ashley, said he can’t wait for his first run around the track.
A car enthusiast since he was a “young fella”, Staker said it was his brother who got him interested in the sport.
Now the pair will line up against each other in their respective Commodores.
Blair Pinal will also make his speedway debut with best mate and driver of their sidecar, Joe Dougherty.
“I’ve been excited about it for a while,” he said.
Now in his third speedway season, Dougherty was influenced by his uncle’s love of cars and decided to take up the sport several years ago.
“My old man used to race years ago as well,” he said.
Dougherty also has an added bonus on his sidecar to make the experience more exciting: no brakes.
“You’ve got to be out of control to be in control.”
Street stocks, juniors, sidecars and motocross mayhem will do battle at the BH Speedway tonight.
Gates open at 4.30pm and admission is $18 for adults, $12 for children under 16 and concession holders $15.
Full canteen and bar facilities will be available. Racing starts at sun down.
