Drivers beware: The kids are back
Thursday, 28th April, 2011
With most local students due back at school today, motorists are being reminded to slow down and take care around school zones.
Local schools - except Sacred Heart Parish Primary - enjoyed a pupil free day yesterday but school zones were back in effect as it was a gazetted school day.
The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) said the majority of school zones operated 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4pm on gazetted school days.
In these zones, 40km/h speed limits apply.
"Motorists are urged to take care around schools and keep the safety of children in mind," a spokesman for the RTA said.
"A motorist is less likely to see a small child and it's harder for children to see oncoming traffic.
"Children lack road experience, they also find it difficult to judge dangerous situations, which is why 40km/h school zones are in place."
