A legend of Broken Hill is this month staring out at readers from news-stands across Australia thanks to local car aficionado Kerry Turley.
A well-known BH car enthusiast, Mr Turley has been featured on the front page of one of the most respected car magazines in the country with the XB Ford Fairmont coupe he has transformed into arguably the best “Mad Max” replica in the world.
A market leader in its genre, “Australian Muscle Car” magazine has also devoted 24 pages inside its latest edition to what it describes as the “ultimate replica” of the car which starred in Mad Max I.
“This is the third time I have been featured on the cover of the magazine,” Mr Turley said proudly.
“I think it’s great for Broken Hill because so many visitors associate the Mad Max movies with Silverton and our region and to be plastered across what is considered one of Australia’s leading magazines can only help local tourism.
“This magazine is recognised around the world, so it should be a huge boost for Broken Hill.”
Mr Turley, whose usual mode of transport is a 100 Series Toyota Landcruiser, began restoring the Mad Max replica toward the end of 2008.
Two years later and with well over $100,000 spent, Mr Turley now has the immaculately turned-out vehicle on the market and fears it will be lost to the Silver City.
“I would love for the car to stay here in Broken Hill and have a home at the new Film Studio precinct,” Mr Turley said.
“But the Mad Max fan base stretches all over the world including Japan and America and I expect an overseas collector will probably end up with his hands on it.”
A regular competitor in the Australasian Safari, Mr Turley has vowed this won’t be the last time he’s featured on the cover of “Australian Muscle Car” magazine.
“I’m already working on the next project.”
