Bulldogs run riot

Monday, 27th June, 2011

North celebrated their seventh win for the season with a thumping 112-point win over the Magpies on Saturday at the Jubilee Oval.

The Magpies had no answer as they were dismantled from the back half to the forward half. North, led by Jayden Kelly, were dominant and disciplined in most positions on the ground.

North’s key backmen in Dempster and Napier cut Central’s two key forwards out of the contest, while the human blanket Matt Garrick claimed another victim with Justin Heath having virtually no impact on the contest.

For the Magpies, Brenton Zanette and Ben Camilleri were tenacious all day.

North ran to the city end in the opening term aided by a three to four goal breeze and it didn’t take them long as Bates had his first inside 50 seconds.

From the bounce North again went forward and Richards gave them a 12-point lead inside one minute of action.

Central’s reply was swift through McInnes and the game had started at a furious pace. North’s ball use early was very good and when Bates kicked his second the lead was out to 13 points. Minutes later Henderson extended the margin to 22.

North were in total control but wayward kicking in front of goal was undoing the good work from down field. Henderson kicked a late goal to give his side a very handy 30-point lead at the first change.

North’s dominance started from the middle where Billings was giving his onballers an armchair ride.

It was now the Magpies turn to run with the breeze but they needed their midfielders to get the footy and while Camilleri was doing his best around the stoppages, the Bulldogs had cut the effectiveness of the Central runners and when they did go forward the likes of Hack, Dempster, Napier and Chris Billings had all the answers.

Mason got the Bulldogs off to a good start with his first and when Henderson and Tom Billings followed suit with majors the margin was out to 50 points and the game was in reach of the fat lady.

Henderson capped off a pretty good term for North with a solo effort from the wing with the ball ending with Howard who kicked truly to give the Bulldogs a 57-point lead at the long break. The Magpies went scoreless in the second term.

The second half started with the Magpies kicking the first through Collins who finally found some space to work in. North were again quick to seize back control and they again began to pepper the goal.

North’s quick ball movement enabled Henderson to kick his fourth for the afternoon while Watson marked strongly and converted and the margin was 65 points.

The class of Camilleri showed out when he kicked Central’s second for the term and while the margin was reduced it was nowhere near enough. The Bulldogs finished the term with Henderson kicking two more for a 73-point lead at the last change.

The final term began with North doing all the attacking. They started with six unanswered goals with Fenton and Kelly kicking two apiece. The Magpies had a small period of time where they controlled the play but they could not convert. Only Sowden was able to find the middle to kick his second for the year.

The Bulldogs finished off the term with Henderson kicking his seventh and Howard kicking North’s 21st for the day.

As good as North have played for most of the season, this was by far their most impressive display. With four or five players to return they seem to be in a good position.

For the Magpies it is time for some soul searching - identify the problems and correct them. They are not a bad side, they just had a really bad day.

Finding the best players wasn’t easy with so many for North and just a handful for the Magpies. While winning the game comfortably the Bulldogs lost Ashley Bates midway through the third term with a lower back problem or even kidney problem. Let’s hope it is not serious and he is back soon.
