Drunken fights keep cops busy

Sunday, 26th June, 2011

Charges were expected to be laid following a series of drunken fights early yesterday morning including one which left a 17-year-old girl injured.

The girl was punched in the eye by another female outside the Cameron Pipe Band Hall on MacGillivray Drive about 12.45am, according to a police spokesman.

He said both had been attending an 18th birthday party at the hall. The alleged offender was expected to be interviewed by police late yesterday.

The spokesman said officers were called to the hall several times between midnight and 1am, after the party had finished, because people were refusing to leave the area.

He said a large number of move-on directions were issued to party-goers.

Police are also investigating at least three other assaults on Saturday night, including one witnessed by officers inside the Night Train disco.

“Police were kept busy for an hour breaking up fights up and down Argent Street,” the spokesman said.

 “We’re still investigating the assaults.”

The spokesman said all of the fights were alcohol related.

During the night at least two people were also fined over $500 for failing to quit a licenced premises and several move on directions were also issued.
