HONOUR: The pool, now being rebuilt, may have a feature named after the late W.S (Bill) O’Neil, a former councillor and champion swimmer in his youth.

An area inside the Broken Hill Aquatic Centre might be named in honour of former councillor and trade union leader, the late Bill O’Neil.

City Council’s Policy and General Committee has recommended that Council name the pool’s Conference Room or another area of the pool after Mr O’Neil for his “long and valued association with the Broken Hill Amateur Swimming Club and the Royal Life Saving Society (West Darling).”

The Committee has also recommended that Council accept a donation of a large photograph of Mr O’Neil and his life membership awards for display at the pool.

The Notice of Motion was put forward by Councillor Christine Adams.

Council will also tonight consider a Technical Services Committee recommendation to award a tender to Rotex Australia for plant, equipment and services for the pool to the value of $578,200. The Committee has recommended the tender for concrete works not be awarded. Instead it has suggested that Council seek quotes for a better price with the expectation of saving about $50,000.
