Giants a hit with kids

Getting players out to training can be a struggle for some football coaches, but Paul Kelly and Kevin Sheedy made it look easy yesterday.
Over 150 kids packed the Jubilee Oval as the star AFL duo held a mammoth training session as part of a promotional visit by Greater Western Sydney.
The players received a pre-training address from GWS Coach Kevin Sheedy, before taking part in a number drills and games under the watch of Paul Kelly and other GWS officials.
Kelly said it was pleasing to see so many kids in Western NSW showing an enthusiasm for Australian football.
“It’s a huge turn up, there’s probably close to 200 kids out there,” he said.
“One of the kids thought the Giants were the Gold Coast but other than that it was pretty good. There was even a few (Giants) jumpers out there.
“It is positive, it just shows you that footy’s strong out here in regional NSW.”
The visit was the first step in establishing GWS’ presence in the city, which falls into the new club’s recruiting zone.
The zone classifications allow GWS to recruit talented young local players without having to select them via the draft.
“We need to get out here not only for the kids but the parents and supporters of footy just to bring the brand out,” Kelly said.
“The Giants are real, they’re coming to the AFL next year, we’re fair dinkum.
