The prospect of sailing on a boat for the first time with twenty strangers would scare anyone. However next month Breanna Meatheringham will do just that on the Young Endeavor.
Breanna was chosen to participate in the Young Endeavor and will embark for her voyage from Sydney to Newcastle early next month.
“I’m pretty nervous about it, I have no sailing experience. About 90 per cent of us haven’t sailed before. However we will be trained by navy instructors.”
Breanna will be one of approximately twenty people from around Australia to take part in the trip aboard the replica tall ship, and she believes the experience will be “worthwhile”.
“I decided to apply because I thought it would be a challenge. It will definitely be a once in a life time experience.”
Miss Meatheringham said that once she accepted her offer she had to undergo medical testing to ensure she was able to endure the ten day expedition.
Breanna hopes that her time on the Young Endeavor will help her in her future goals.
“I think my time there will allow me to keep building on my leadership skills.”
The Young Endeavor Youth Scheme aims to challenge and inspire young Australians through their voyages while also teaching them important life skills such as team work, respect for others, responsibility and leadership.
Breanna will travel to Sydney where she will board the Young Endeavor on the 1 August.
