Pies must win

As we head towards the pointy end of the 2011 season, round 13 shapes as an important one for all clubs as the finals are getting closer and positions are still up for grabs.

Today at the Alma Oval has simply come down to a must-win for the Central Football Club. They trail the third-placed Robins by a game and a half and a win would put them back in the hunt.

For the Roos it is also pretty straight forward - if they want the weekend off and the minor premiership they too must win as they sit two and a half wins away from top spot.

On paper the Roos look pretty strong with Vlatko, Staker, Magin, Corey and Neal all returning.

The South forward half looks as potent as any in town with the big key forwards in Corey, Stephens and Schorn and the runners in Mackiewicz and Purcell and new recruit Weller the perfect foil.

The Magpies have also regained some experienced players but their back half looks a little under strength.

Schnickel and McClure will have to shoulder the responsibility but they will need big games from Berg and Jelbert in the back half.

The Magpies must restrict the ball movement the Roos get from the middle and this is no easy task.

While both sides have talented midfields they do play wide of each other and at best the Magpies would look to break even, which probably won’t be good enough today.

The South back half also looks pretty good with plenty of experienced players who love to run and carry the footy from defence and set up forward scoring chances.

If they can get on top it will make life difficult for the Magpie forwards. This means that Bray, Zanette and Lawrence, if he goes forward, must make the most of every opportunity because you get the feeling they will be rare.

Both sides will be giving their all but they will also have an eye on the other result which will be the norm for the next couple of weeks.

With the Roos looking very strong and the Magpies hit by injuries you would have to lean towards South to claim the points today.

My tip: South by 20 points.
