Railwaytown Public School students and teachers got into the spirit of Book Week early yesterday by dressing up as book characters and holding a parade.

“The parade was very successful, just about every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 was in a costume,” Principal Nigel Sherrard told the BDT.

This year’s theme is “One World, Many Stories” and Mr Sherrard said there were a number of short listed books which the school would be promoting over the week.

Yesterday students also participated in a colouring-in competition and winners from every class received a book.

During the week there will also be outdoor reading, shared readings and Mr Sherrard will read a book to the whole school.

He said there will be a focus on national flags and the stories behind them.

Book Week is a national event but Railwaytown is running it a week early because of other commitments next week.

“(The week shows) how important reading is, it promotes (reading) across the school and home reading which is also an important part of that,” Mr Sherrard said.
