Former jockey Bill Graham has made a habit of picking winners ever since he landed the Silver City Cup at his very first attempt back in 1956.
Yesterday Bill was given the honour of drawing the names of the lucky sponsors who will enjoy having races named after them at this year’s Cup meeting on October 22.
As President of Club Legion, Bill was also pleased to announce that this year’s feature event - the Combined Clubs Silver City Cup - would have its prizemoney boosted to $10,000, a more than 30 per cent increase on last year.
“You have got to keep moving and improving and with ten-thousand dollars now on offer we hope that the Silver City Cup will be able to attract a better class of horse,” Mr Graham said.
“Better horses bring more people to the track and that it what we want to see because it is a great day for all the family,” he added.
Silver City Race Club President Christine Kersten said she was “thrilled” with the generosity of the clubs to lift the prizemoney.
“We have been overwhelmed with the response we have had from all our sponsors,” Mrs Kersten said.
“The overall sponsorship support we have now attracted is more than last year, which is remarkable when you consider that a couple of months ago we were considering cancelling the event.
“Because of the great support we have received the club has decided that in lieu of a sponsors’ night, we will treat our supporters in a special venue at the races on Cup day,” Mrs Kersten added.
As well as the Combined Clubs Silver City Cup, Lion Nathan Sprint and Coughlan Drilling Handicap, yesterday local businesses Standley Distributors, Woodman Tyre Repairs and Atlas Copco were all drawn as race name sponsors.
“We’ll have some more exciting news about the Cup meeting very soon,” Mrs Kersten said, “race day is now just eight weeks away.”
