Kyle and Jamie Lister have not just walked out the school gates for the holidays but for the last time in Broken Hill.
The Sacred Heart Primary siblings, along with younger brother Noah and police officer parents Grant and Gillian, are swapping the dusty mullock heaps of Broken Hill for the harbour views of their hometown, Sydney.
“They’re devastated,” Gillian told the BDT. “They settled in very well and the school was very welcoming.
“But they’re happy about moving back with their family.”
The family moved to the city in 2009 after Grant received a promotion to the Barrier Local Area Command as duty officer.
After two-years in the city, Gillian said she has had to make one of the hardest decisions in her life.
“We’re also sad about leaving,” she said.
She credits a wild dust storm shortly after moving to the city as one of the most memorable events.
“I didn’t know if it was an unusual event or a normal event,” she said.
“I had to pick the kids up from school on the black out day. I was amazed.”
Gillian will take up the role of crime co-ordinator ar Hurstville Police Station whilst Grant will become duty officer at Surry Hills.
“It’s a totally different environment here to the one I’m going to,” Grant said.
Grant, a local soccer coach, said returning to Sydney meant going back to something he loves - the beach.
“I love the salt water. It’s just fantastic catching a wave.”
The family leaves the city on Wednesday.
