Local players make the cut

Broken Hill will be well represented at the upcoming Under 13 and 14 Zone Championships after seven local footballers qualified for the carnival.
They were selected after starring for a combined Broken Hill/Wentworth team that played in the Zone Trials earlier this month.
The Zone Championships will see the players representing the Riverina Giants, and taking on teams from all across NSW.
Coach Dale Tonkin said all of the boys showed great endeavour at the carnival, but predicted that an even greater level of effort would be required at the Championships.
“All seven of the boys extended themselves and it was great for them to be able to compete with the rest of southern NSW,” he said.
“All the boys deserve their spot at the Zone Champs but they will all now need to further increase their output, and I’m looking forward to seeing them compete at the next level.”
The four-day Championships will be held in Albury from October 3, and Mr Tonkin will receive reports from AFL club officials about the boys’ progress.
Across the four days the players will also receive lessons about fitness, nutrition, conduct and sports science.
“That’s very important because we want good footballers, but we also good people - good kids outside of football,” said Mr Tonkin.
