Yesterday’s rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the children attending the YMCA school holiday program - they were safe and warm in a kitchen.

They visited the Legion Club where they learned how to cook chicken legs and  honey and chocolate crackles.

YMCA holiday program co-ordinator Teegan Ralph said the kids really got stuck into it once they saw the menu.

“They love eating it more than they do cooking,” Ms Ralph said.

General Manager of Club Legion, Anne Rogers, said it was great to see the kids there.

“They were excellent students and so well-behaved,” she said. “This is something we might look at doing every school holidays.”

Ms Ralph said after the cooking the children were going back to the YMCA to play games.

“We were supposed to go to the park but it is raining,” she said.

Today they are off to the Flying Doctor base and tomorrow is party day.

Ms Ralph said 18 to 20 children had turned up every day for the YMCA holiday program.
