Ace day for bikers

Saturday, 5th September, 2009

While there is sure to be plenty of horsepower on the roads today for the Broken Hill Harley Riders' Association's annual poker run, the fastest engine won't necessarily win the race.

It will be the best hand of cards that takes the prize, so riders with bikes of all shapes and sizes have a chance. The poker run will see riders taken on a 160 kilometre journey to five secret locations around the local area. They will be given a card at each of the five stops and the best hand at the end of the leisurely race will win the major prize.

There are also a number of other prizes on offer which have been donated by local businesses. Harley Club President Bob Fraser said the event typically attracted between 70 and 80 riders, with partners and families also encouraged to attend. "It's a good time of the year to bring bikes out for a nice leisurely ride in the sun," he said. "The police are good. It's all a bit of fun. "It's not a race, we will just be idling along. "It's a chance for everyone to get together and go for a bit of a spin." The event will also raise money for the local wildlife group RRANA (Rescue and Rehabilitation of Australian Native Animals.)
