Cancer man a con artist
Thursday, 4th September, 2008
Police are warning residents about a con man who is targeting the elderly.
A police spokesman said yesterday that the man was going up to local elderly residents asking them for money, and sometimes claiming that they would get a 10 per cent return on it.
He also claims to have cancer and says he needs the money for treatment.
"He is very convincing, but that is not the case," the police spokesman said.
The man is described as being in his mid-fifties, Mediterranean in appearance with an olive complexion, about 168cm tall (5'6") and of medium build.
He also has a hook nose.
Most of his approaches have been by door-knocking, police said.
They said if anyone is approached by, or comes across, a man matching the above description they should not hand any money over but should phone the local police immediately on 8087 0299.
